Pan's Labyrinth (2006)

Guillermo del Toro's dark fantasy picture Pan's Labyrinth was released in 2006. The story is on a young girl named Ofelia (Ivana Baquero), who is brought to live with her new stepfather, Captain Vidal (Sergi López), a harsh and abusive military commander, in 1944 Spain, five years after the end of the Spanish Civil War.

Ofelia enters a mythical world she finds in an old labyrinth close to her new home to escape the harsh realities of her life. She encounters a faun named Pan (Doug Jones) in this world who claims to be the long-lost princess of a magical kingdom and assigns her a number of perilous tasks to carry out in order to prove it.

Together with Captain Vidal and his troops, who are searching for a group of rebels hidden in the adjacent woodland, Ofelia must face the harsh realities of her life as she makes her way through the difficulties of the magical realm. The surprising and devastating finale sees the two universes collide.

The movie received accolades for its magnificent visuals, examination of the storytelling and imaginative powers, commentary on the tragedies of war, and significance of resistance and revolt. Fans of dark fantasy and horror films regard it as a cult classic because it received three Academy Awards.
